4. Sungai Tekala Recreational Forest (Hutan Rekreasi Sungai Tekala)

Sungai Tekala Recreational Forest was recently renamed as Taman Eco Rimba Negeri Selangor Sungai Tekala (whew!). It’s a 16.8 hectares recreational park deep within the heart of Bangi, and it requires a very low entrance fee of RM2 for adults.

While it isn’t your conventional neighbourhood park, it’s one of the best forest parks where you can enjoy a fun outing to play in cold shallow rivers and slow streams that are suitable for kids too. That said, there is a waterfall located further in, but it does require some extra climbing so you can just stick to the base for a relaxing time out.

The base is also home to gazebos that serve as a dedicated area for picnics and barbeques, bathrooms with changing rooms near the entrance, and campsites for those who’d like to partake in camping activities.

I’d recommend bringing anti-slip shoes because of the wet and slippery nature of the place, and to apply some eucalyptus oil with packets of salt handy as you may run into the occasional leech, especially during rainy periods.

5. Kelana Jaya Park (Taman Bandaran Kelana Jaya)

Opposite Dorsett Grand Subang Hotel is one of Selangor’s newest parks as of 2023, the Subang Ria Recreational Park. A stunning public park that is home to 3 lakes which complete the scenic views of this open space. It’s fondly referred to as the green lung of Subang Jaya by the nearby residents.

Visitors can enjoy a leisure stroll around the loop which stretches up to 1.1km, stretch their legs on a picnic mat on its green pastures, or make use of its outdoor gym facilities and children’s playground.

1Utama’s Secret Garden is a hidden gem located at its rooftop, that is a favourite amongst urban nature and flower lovers.

You can access it through the lifts towards the end of the bridge that connects the new and old wing, with no entry fee required. How awesome is that?

16. Templer Forest Eco Park

The Templer Forest Eco Park is not your typical recreational park. It’s a 1214 hectares nature reserve that was gazetted as a “Botanical Garden and Public Park” under the land enactment in 1955.

This forest reserve is home to multi-tiered waterfalls located deep within, also known as the Kanching Waterfalls, along with jungle streams and hiking trails.

Picnic grounds are available for visitors to enjoy a leisure picnic or the occasional barbeque, or a round of fishing in the waters. It’s also a popular hiking place for visitors who’d like to take a dip into the pool which is 15 minutes away from the base.

Of course, the more adventurous ones often opt for the deeper hike which takes an extra 40 minutes to reach the waterfalls. I’d recommend going in a group or with an experienced hiker as the terrain can be rough for beginners and casual park visitors.

17. Kuala Selangor Nature Park

Opened in 1987, the Kuala Selangor Nature Park is one of Wilayah Persekutuan's nature attractions that boasts up to 296 hectares of greenery that is a home to countless flora and fauna. This nature reserve is divided into 2 main areas; the 201 hectares Tropical Rainforest and 95 hectares Swamp Forest which is home to exotic mangrove trees.

This reserve is managed by the Malaysian Nature Society and is a fantastic site for wildlife spotting and bird spotting. It’s home to over 150 species of birds that pass through for their annual migration between September to April. Birds you can typically spot there include the endangered milky storks, herons, black shoulder eagles, kingfishers, warblers, and many more.

I’d recommend bringing binoculars if this is one of your first few forays into bird spotting for an easier time spotting birds amidst the trees. There’s a small entrance fee of RM4 for adults and RM1 for children to enter this nature reserve, while senior citizens above 60 years old pay only RM2.
